News editor - The Copperas Cove High School Pride of Cove Marching Band placed second overall at the Invitational Central Texas Marching Championships on Saturday. After a rainy morning, 20 Texas high school bands converged at Leo Buckley Stadium in Killeen. The bands competed in different class divisions, with the Pride of Cove Marching Band placed in the top three during the preliminaries in 5A competition. CCHS Band Director Randy Kelley said that when the year first starts out, the band performs a special half-time show during the football season. “As we get closer to October, we then start performing our bit show that we do for competition,” Kelley said. “The band practices 2 hours everyday in addition to the class time spent during school hours to prepare for competition.” During the competition, there are seven judges per class. “Three judges rate the music, 2 judge the marching and then there is a judge each for percussion and auxiliary, which is the color guard, “ Kelley said. “They also awarded for Outstanding drumline, auxiliary, marching and music.” Kelley said that after placing second in preliminaries, the band was also awarded outstanding percussion in the 5A division. “The band came into the finals with two points over the first place team,” Kelley said. “The kids were very excited because they were only .76 points below the team who won the championships.” Kelley said that at the end of the day, the Pride of Cove had second place overall, outstanding percussion and outstanding auxiliary or color guard. “They did really well,” Kelley said. “They work really hard and were really excited about raising their score during the competition.” |
