CCISD board recognizes students

Students for Copperas Cove Independent School district were recognized at the board of Trustees Meeting on Tuesday.
The students were recognized for their work in a poster contest sponsored by Ft. Hood. This year’s theme was about the 50th anniversary of the Brown vs. Education decision.
Ricshell Staughter of Miss Jewell placed in the 1-4 grade division; Aaron Sheppard from J.L. Williams placed in the grade 5-6 division, and SC. Lee student Ashlyn Barnes placed in the 7-8-grade division.
District winner and overall winner was Mindy Walker for the 9-12 grade division.
Students from C.R. Clements were also recognized at the meeting for their entries in the Rising Star Literacy Magazine Competition. The school turned in over 75 entries. Out of those entries, six will be recognized in a May 1 ceremony.
Winners were fifth graders Drew Fisher for poetry, Lina Perez for narrative, and Nick Arrisola for Art.
Six grade winners were Kelse McCarter for poetry, Abbie Gerig for narrative, and Campbell Heiss for art.
Band Director Randy Kelley spoke to members of the board on accomplishments of the Copperas Cove High School Band this year.
Of the students who participated in the all district, all regional and solo competitions, 34 made all district, 25 made all region, and 13 made the freshmen all region.
“We had a goal of 30 to make it this far,” Kelley said, “We got 38. The highest honor a student can get is all-state band, and we were lucky to have one student make that.”
Junior Robert Moore made the 5A Symphonic All-State Band. He plays the clarinet.
In regular business at the board meeting, the Consent Agenda was passed unanimously. Included in the agenda were the approval of minutes, personnel resignations and recommendations, out of state trips as well as the approval of the 2004-05 school calendar, textbook adoptions, long-range technology plan, and the Electricity Aggregation Agreement.
The Board also accepted a bid from F. J. Miller Company for in the amount of $54,430. The Board had a lower bid from another company, but after reviewing the work on the uniforms, they decided to go with the higher bid due to quality.
The Board also approved the contract to The Olen Williams Company for the Football Stadium Scoreboard. The contract is for $325,000 which includes the scoreboard, video production equipment.
They also won the bid on the upgrade of gym scoreboards, for $13,075.
Other action included the Sunset Review recommendations.
Taken off the agenda was the review for Channel One, Pre-K-6 Departmentalization and PDAS/ATAR appraisal system pending further information.
The Board did accept the committee recommendations on the Accelerated Reader, Athletics/P.E. and HOSTS programs as well as district policies and the code of conduct handbooks.
Also passed on the agenda was the approval of Legislative Consulting Services.
“There has been no other time when our participation in the legislative process is more critical,” Superintendent Dr. Glen Acker said, “We can achieve more by joining ranks with other districts and by participating in TASA’s Legislative/Governmental Consulting Services (LCS).”
LCS plans to employ experts in the field of public school finance plans under consideration by the legislature. They also plan to initiate research, inform and actively engage parents and communities in efforts to support public schools in Texas.
Stephen Huffor and Jeremy Shannon’s’ probationary contracts were terminated in other action by the school board as well as accepting the recommendation of the non-renewal of a contract for teacher Floyd Lee White.
The board also went over monthly and quarterly financial reports and the state comptrollers 2003 property value study.
