The votes are in for the run-off election and R. Ray Gatewood has claimed the Place five spot in City Council.
The two candidates received most of the votes during the May 15 general election.
In the earlier election, Gatewood received 290 votes while Charlie Youngs received 281 votes.
Fred Harris, who has held the Place 5 seat on the council, was unable to run for office again because he already had two consecutive terms.
This election had Youngs with 103 early voting ballots cast and 105 Election Day ballots cast for a total of 208 votes.
Gatewood received 145 early voting ballots and 206 Election Day votes for a total of 351.
With 19,000 registered voters in Copperas Cove, the total number of ballots cast for the special election was 561.
“It is very discouraging that so low a percentage of the registered voters interested in their local government,” Mayor Bradi Diaz said.
Diaz said that this years general election had a very low turnout compared to years before when there was usually a turnout of about 2,000 votes tallied.
This is the first time to take office for Gatewood, who has said his focus is on taking the necessary steps to draw business and industry into Copperas Cove.
Gatewood is a senior pasture at Bethesda Ministries and has lived in Copperas Cove for eight years.
