Delegates from Keep Copperas Cove Beautiful accepted Gold Star recognition from Keep Texas Beautiful during the 37th annual KTB Conference. The conference, with the theme of “Explore and Experience our Texas Environment,” was held June 15-18 in Austin. Of 330 towns, cities and counties in KTB’s statewide network, KCCB was one of only 51 KTB affiliates to receive Gold Star recognition.
To achieve this exemplary status, affiliates were required to share their mission and goals, answer questions about their public education programs and provide a letter of support from a community leader. City council member Annabelle Smith graciously agreed to send a letter on behalf of KCCB. KCCB also met the requirements of paying an annual fee of $75 to KTB, attending a KTB training session and participating in at least one KTB-endorsed activity, such as the Texas Trash-off and Texas Recycles Day.
KCCB also achieved an “Honorable Mention” for their Governor’s Community Achievement Award submission. The GCAA recognizes nine Texas communities for their outstanding overall efforts to keep their communities beautiful by awarding each a share of $1 million in landscaping prize money. The awards are presented to communities in nine population categories that have the best grassroots volunteer environmental programs in the state. These prizes are designated for landscaping along state-maintained highways in their communities. The GCAA program has recognized outstanding communities for 35 consecutive years and the Texas Department of Transportation has provided prize funds since 1985.
“We are very proud to have been recognized with an Honorable Mention for our submission to the GCAA awards. We are told that winning anything the first time you enter is very rare. We are already working on next year’s award application and feel confident that we can compete for $95,000 in landscaping from the Texas Department of Transportation,” said Amy Anderson, KCCB Executive Director.
The Copperas Cove City Council established the Keep Copperas Cove Beautiful Commission on Sept. 17, 2002. The commission’s responsibility is to recommend policies related to litter prevention, beautification and community improvement and the minimization of solid waste. A commission was formed of volunteers who submitted applications and were approved by the city council.
