The Copperas Cove Fire Department has received a grant allowing for the purchase of 10 full sets of firefighter protective gear.
The department had been denied an original grant requesting 20 sets of firefighter gear that would cost about $20,000.
The grant, which was first denied in March, will pay up to $12,000 for 10 new sets.
“Now we just have to figure out who will get the sets,” Fire Chief Dennis Haas said. “Part of the grant application required that we already do the research and have the bids in before we were either approved or denied.”
Haas said that they already know which bidder they will use to purchase the sets.
During the grant application process, if the applicant is denied their application may be modified and then placed on a waiting list.
After the departments are awarded their grants, they have a certain number of days to use the money. Afterwards, they have to submit proof of purchase with the purchase price. Money left over from the purchase or those funds not used are then reallocated to the departments that were placed on the contingency list.
“We were placed on the waiting list and as more money became available we were notified that we were awarded the money,” Haas said. “We were also awarded $7,700 from the City so we will be able to replace 17 sets. That’s about 1/3 of our sets or 36 percent.”
Haas said that they expect to have the sets ordered by the end of the month and will then just have to wait for the sets to arrive.
