News editor - If President George’s Bush’s proposed budget is adopted, Copperas Cove Independent School District would lose $9.5 million of Impact Aid per year, according to a document sent to Representative Chet Edwards’ office from CCISD administration.
The document also said that of the 19,200 federal children served by Killeen and Copperas Cove school districts, the Bush Budget proposes that funding be eliminated for 66 percent of them. Under his budget, the off-post military children and children of civilian workers at Fort Hood would no longer be eligible under Impact Aid.
If the proposed budget is adopted, Killeen Independent School District and Cove ISD would lose Heavy Impact status. Killeen ISD stands to lose $12 million of Impact Aid per year, the document reports.
If approved, the budget would mean that CCISD would have to implement massive cuts in services to all children, federal and non-federal, said the document.
Dave Helfert, Chet Edwards’ communications director, said that the budget is not set in stone yet. “You can bet it won’t go down easy,” he said.
Edwards took issue with the proposed budget during a House budget committee meeting, said Helfert.
