The Copperas Cove Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau is giving out free, handmade bows, thanks to several area florists.
The chamber starting handing out bows, made with all-weather material, last Thursday and has given out at least 300 so far, said David Landmann, executive director.
Michele’s Floral and Gifts, A&L Florist and The Daisy are all donating the bows to the chamber, Landmann said.
Michele’s also donated bows to Trinity Christian School in Copperas Cove for the decoration of the historical Allin House on Main St.
Michele McGuire, owner of Michele’s Floral and Gifts, said she makes the bows during her spare time at night and on weekends. She does it because “this is our community,” she said.
“Our soldiers are putting their lives on the line to keep this community the way it is. I wish people would do more things to help soldiers,” she said.
McGuire has also made ribbons for Cove schools.
The Daisy hasn’t been able to donate to the chamber yet, but plans to as soon as their shipment of ribbon comes in. Becky Stirnkorb of The Daisy said they’ve been out of ribbon because people have been buying it as soon as it is stocked.
“We bought ten bolts one day and it was gone the next,” she said.
Stirnkorb, a self-confessed Army brat, said, “It’s something all of us should do for our county, for all of us.”
A&L Florist is also making bows from their stock of ribbon to donate to the chamber. “It’s just a small thing we can do in support of our soldiers,” said Heide Holman, owner.
“We all hope for their safe return,” she said.
The chamber does not charge for the bows but Landmann said people can donate money to help defray the cost of the ribbon. There is no limit to the amount of ribbons a person can take, but the chamber tries to ask people to be reasonable. “We don’t want to tell people there’s a limit on the bows. We want to see yellow all around the city,” he said.
