Two running for city seat

- Place 2 of the Copperas Cove City Council has had two candidates file for the May 3 election. The Leader-Press will help its readers learn more about the candidates by publishing the candidates’ answers to questions supplied by The Leader-Press .
Last week’s question was “What do you feel is the biggest challenge facing the City of Copperas Cove? What aspect of the city needs improvement
This week, we asked the candidates “ Why did you decide to run for this office?”
Candidates’ answers appear alphabetically.
Ray Don Clayton:
I got into politics in 1996 when Copperas Cove and Lampasas County had a dispute over money due Cove by the county for past due EMS bills. As a result, an 18 month old baby who had fallen into a swimming pool just outside the city limits was refused EMS service by the city because of a policy put in place by the then city manager.
This had tragic results and I felt that the city and county governments’ refusal to work together resulted in a tremendous failure to the community.
In 1997, Copperas Cove annexed our property into the city. After much deliberation, I decided to run for council. My chance came in 2000 and I won my council seat.
I feel that I have much to offer the citizens of Copperas Cove and I am willing to work alongside the current City manager, staff, and fellow council members to make decisions that will help keep Copperas Cove a great place to live.
Roger “Odie” O’Dwyer:
Currently, we have five children and eight grandchildren that are forced to live no closer than three hours away to find meaningful employment that matches their education. I’m not pleased about that.
I feel that I can increase the emphasis on bringing light clean industry to our community better than my opponent brings. I’m retired and well qualified in business matters; therefore, I can devote this experience full time to city business. This will allow for multi-generation families in close proximity.
I will improve the quality of life in a community. We need to have the taxpayers’ investments made available for use by them. They paid for them. The city and school district can work even more closely in sharing taxpayer provided resources with all of the taxpayers. They will greatly assist quality of life improvement.
