Clayton retains council seat

The May 3 election decided several contested races for Copperas Cove Independent School District Board of Trustee and City Council seats.
In the race for City Council Place 2, Ray Don Clayton held on to his position with 461 votes against challenger Roger “Odie” O’Dwyer’s 310 votes.
Clayton, a resident of Copperas Cove since 1961, was originally elected into office in 2000. He graduated from Cove High School in 1970, then from Texas State Technical College with a two-year degree in Water and Wastewater Technology.
Clayton has been self-employed since 1977, working as an insurance agent until 1979.
In 1980, he formed Clayton Automotive Inc. and opened Precision Tune Franchise in Odessa. He sold the franchise in 1983 and opened Clayton Automotive in Copperas Cove
Place 1 of the School Board had two in the running. Mary Ann Glass kept her seat with 56 percent of the vote compared to William “Bill” Waltz’s 44 percent.
Glass has lived in Cove since 1972. She is the business manager of Cumulus Broadcasting, Inc.
Her civic activities include being a CCISD Trustee for six years. She currently serves as Secretary of the Board. She was also elected Secretary of the Board in 1999 and 2000 as well as Vice President in 2001. She served on the CCHS Vocational Advisory Board from 1981 to 1995 in addition to the PTA and 4H Club.
Place 2 of the School Board had five candidates file for that position. James Mickan, who didn’t seek re-election, held the seat. Bob Weiss won with 35 percent of the vote. Other contenders for the seat were Jerry Keys with 25 percent of the vote, D. Lloyd Thomas with five percent, Debra Hardison with 20 percent and Cathy Camp with 15 percent.
Weiss has been a resident of Copperas Cove since 1963. He is a retired principal and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Southwest Texas State University with a major in art and a minor in English.
He also has a Master of Education from Southwest Texas State University as well as nine post graduate hours for certification in mid-management and six additional post graduate hours from Southwest Texas State University.
Weiss was employed in the CCISD for 36 years, 26 of which he served as a principal. He also taught English at the junior level and taught art in grades one through six, taught mechanical drawing, art and crafts at high school level. He was principal at Avenue E Elementary, which had 950 students in grades five and six. He was also principal at Lovett Ledger Intermediate. Weiss assisted in the planning, construction and opening of Lovett Ledger.
He is a former member of Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association and held local and district level offices including district president of TEPSA and also served on the state executive committee of TEPSA for two years. In addition, Weiss is a former member of the National Elementary Principals Association and a current member of the Copperas Cove Lions Club and a member of the Copperas Cove Retired Teachers Association.
