Council enters into aid contract

By KRISTAN HALL

The Copperas Cove City Council approved an agreement Tuesday that will help area entities coordinate mutual aid responses to disasters and civil emergencies.
The Inter-Jurisdictional Mutual Aid Agreement is in response to the events of 9/11, when the Federal Emergency Management Agency recognized that county and city government sometimes have difficulties coordinating a response to a disaster.
The agency therefore recommended an agreement between area municipalities to coordinate services and the Texas Attorney General developed such an agreement. The document was then forwarded to officials in city and county government.
Also during Tuesday’s council meeting, members approved a resolution to submit a grant application to Texas STEP for a grant. The grant will be used to reduce the use and distribution of tobacco products among minors.
Since the council was meeting for the first time since the May 3 election, several re-elected members needed to be sworn in. Taking the oath of office were Mayor Roger Nauert, Bradi Diaz and Ray Don Clayton. Diaz was later appointed Mayor Pro Tem.
Nauert read a statement proclaiming Katie Burak, 2, a “True Copperas Cove Hero.” Burak ran without being told to a neighbor’s house to get help for her mother, who was in the midst of a sudden medical emergency and unable to call 911.
Jim Rudd, Copperas Cove Independent School District director of general services and Dr. Rose Cameron, administrative assistant to the superintendent, gave certificates of appreciation to City Secretary Pamela Russell and Assistant City Secretary Angelia Briggs.
Both women performed duties related to the May 3 election, said Rudd.
In other business, the council appointed three new members to the Copperas Cove Cemetery Advisory Board, approved a resolution to support the preservation of public transit funding and heard several reports.
