The Copperas Cove Independent School District has received the preliminary results for the 2002-03 Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills and Cove schools continue to make the grade.
Copperas Cove surpassed the state average in the percentage of students passing several TAKS sections, with students in the district’s elementary schools pulling ahead of the pack, with more than 90 percent of the students passing all but the writing section.
The TAKS tries students on their retention of Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, the standards of which are set by the state, said Dr. Rose Cameron, CCISD administrative assistant to the superintendent.
Cameron applauds the teachers, parents and students for the successes in TAKS, calling it a collaborative effort.
The stakes in this test were especially high for third graders, said Cameron. “If third graders don’t pass the test, they will not advance to the next grade,” she said. Students have had two chances to pass and will have yet another opportunity in July.
This is the first year for administration of the TAKS test, which replaced the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills.
Cameron said the district will use the scores as an indicator of what areas need to be focused on. “The scores help us to determine needs in this district,” she said. Additionally, each administration of the test will bring more adjustments, she said.
Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services Gail Milligan said the district’s educational programs are tailored to meet the learning needs of students. “We have an individual plan for every child,” she said.
Milligan said the district has already been looking at scores to see what needs to be done to improve.
Copperas Cove schools beat out the state average of percentage passing in areas including 10th- and 11th-grade science and social studies and seventh- and eighth-grade reading, math, writing and social studies.
Copperas Cove’s lowest score was in ninth-grade math, with just 64 percent passing. But this score was still higher than the state’s average of 63 percent passing. The number of 10th- and 11th-graders passing the writing section in Copperas Cove was also a low 65 percent, falling behind the state’s scores of 72 and 69 percent passing, respectively.
