Plat for Boys & Girls Club gets OK

By KRISTAN HALL
News editor -
The Copperas Cove City Council met Tuesday to hold a public hearing on the final plat of the City of Copperas Cove Addition, location one. The plat was originally submitted as the Boys’ and Girls Club of Copperas Cove, a title that was deemed inappropriate, said City Planner David Lilley.
One person, Diane Steele, used the opportunity to express concerns over the plat, which is a four-acre tract near the cemetery and originally intended to be part of the cemetery. She asked if Cove residents would have the chance to speak on the use of the property.
City Manager Steve Alexander said yes, then asked Lilley for clarification. Lilley said any change in the usage of the property, whether for a junkyard or single-family, would require a public hearing.
Although city ordinance requires a plat be filed before any development can occur, the city council previously approved an agreement with the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Coryell County to pursue the use of this property for the construction of a recreation center.
The final plat was later approved.
Council members also approved a request from the city staff to make three staffing changes. One change will create a part-time classification for a receptionist in the building and development department, another will reclassify a library assistant to a reference assistant/electronic technology coordinator and the third will reclassify the grants administrator as a grants administrator/budget analyst.
The council also appointed two individuals to the Planning & Zoning Commission, the advisory body on subdivision and zoning issues. The new commissioners are Bruce Beals and R. Ray Gatewood, filling positions one and two.
In other business, the council held a public hearing on, and later approved, the final plat of Clear Creek Estates section two, renewed the original and amended agreements between the city and the Cove Economic Development Corporation for the exchange of land and heard an update from Linda Tyler, director of community services, on the summer parks and recreation programs.
