The Board of Trustees of the Copperas Cove Independent School District met briefly on Tuesday to approve two construction bids.
Both bids are for paving. One paving project is the paving and grading of areas at Bulldawg stadium, while the other is the expansion of parking at Martin Walker Elementary. While six bid packets were mailed, only one contractor responded — Smith Construction Company.
Smith will excavate and grade the southeast parking area, install a subgrade that meets the city’s specifications and install two inches of compacted asphalt paving. They will also excavate and grade the area behind the stadium around the concession stand, installing a subgrade and installing an inch-and-a-half of compacted asphalt.
The project costs $28,414 and will be complete by August.
The area in front of Martin Walker between the drive and street will be made into a parking lot, as will an area to the south of the school. The project will create 40 additional parking spaces, said Sonny Monroe, assistant superintendent of business operations.
The construction company will excavate at least seven inches of ground and use it to extend the slope. They will then install a subgrade that abides by the city’s specifications, prime the area with oil and apply the asphalt.
Smith’s proposed and accepted bid is $22.048. The project has a complete date of August.
Monroe said that the administrative staff recommends awarding the contract for the paving projects to Smith Construction. “They have done work for the district in the past and do quality work at a fair price,” he said.
