Central Texans get their opportunity to sound off on redistricting in a hearing scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Baylor Law School in Waco.
The hearing was scheduled in a redistricting committee meeting on Wednesday in which current Congressional District 11 Rep. Chet Edwards of Waco testified. Democrat Edwards straddles the fence on being moved into a proposed District 31, by a mile, or two, from his Waco residence which would move him into a more southerly area.
That mapping came from Republican Rep. Phil King, of Weatherford, but he withdrew his redistricting plan Tuesday afternoon, moving speculation in Rep. Chet Edwards’s Waco office toward only slight district boundary line changes in Central Texas.
Edwards’s media spokesman Chris Chwastyk told the Leader-Press that voter rights concerns in the Dallas-Fort Worth area shifted congressional redistricting attention there, bringing about King’s withdrawal.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the City of Copperas Cove, Coryell, Bell and Lampasas counties appeared headed toward District 17, if that part of King’s map stays intact.
King’s District 17 included a small part of northern McLennan County, cutting through the Waco metropolitan area.
King’s map, in Plan 1249, was the sixth in a series of proposals, according to Chwastyk.
Proceedings can be followed on the Web at www.capitol.state.tx.us.
